This three day intensive is designed for Artists who have had some experience in encaustic and are fluent in the basics or have taken previous Introductory Workshop. In this intensive, students will be encouraged to develop their voice with this medium with individual attention and work time. Students will be encouraged to stretch as we explore more challenging surface design and execution. We will work towards making work that demonstrates a style emerging or a particular interest.  Students will leave feeling accomplished and inspired!

Introduction to Encaustic Painting with Helene Farrar

Drip, pour, drag, layer, heat, and incise! Investigate the ancient medium of encaustic painting in this very hands-on workshop using pigmented wax, and a heated palette! Explore a rich variety of marks and surfaces while doing image transfer, etching, and collaging in this seductive medium. This introductory workshop will guide you through the basics of fusing, paint application and its possibilities, collage, stencils and going beneath the surface with line work and scraping.  Class time will be divided between demonstrations and individual work time.  We will also touch on proper studio ventilation, wax safety, and how to “finish” artworks in terms of framing and care.  Students will leave with multiple finished pieces and the understanding of proper studio set-up. This class is suitable for ALL levels!

The Golden Hour, Painting the Warmth: Landscape Painting in Encaustic at the Farnsworth Museum, Rockland, Maine

Wednesday and Thursday, Oct 25 and 26, 2023, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Investigate the ancient medium of encaustic in this very hands-on workshop, and develop sketches/photographs/ideas about the fall landscape into encaustic paintings. While making choices in how to approach the landscape, students will explore a rich variety of marks, transfer, and stencil techniques. Class time will be divided between demonstrations, individual work time, and discussion about Maine’s strong contemporary and historical connection to the landscape genre. We will also touch on proper studio ventilation, wax safety, and how to “finish” artworks in terms of framing and care. Students will leave with multiple finished pieces and the understanding of proper studio set-up.

Mapping Place:  A 3-Day Landscape Painting Retreat in Encaustic

At the Historic Vaughn Homestead in Hallowell, Maine

Immerse yourself in nature and art making in an extraordinary place in Central Maine. Enjoy the majestic views of the Kennebec River, stone bridges, luscious gardens and ancient trees whilst developing work both on-site and in the Carriage House studios. Dig deep into encaustic, building texture and surface that responds to morning work considering atmosphere, light and landscape forms. Attention will be given to individual vision and developing strong compositional work. Participants will create paintings based on memory, sketches, and personal interpretations of place. This retreat will also offer guided walks, historic and environmental tours of the Homestead, the Vaughn Woods, yoga, and organic meals. This retreat is open to beginners and new to encaustic. Beautiful things happen when the ancient medium of encaustic meets with mixed media materials. Join us for an intensive three-day workshop and explore encaustic on a basic level and its relationship to textile, photographs, and natural materials. Students will investigate how to transfer images, stencil, collage, and learn techniques for building up surfaces. There is a $60 materials fee per student; materials will be supplied by the instructor, including four- and eight-inch-sized beginner panels.

Two Sessions of this 2 - Day Workshop for KIds!

Thursday & Friday, July 13 & 14, 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Monday & Tuesday, August 21 & 22, 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

The Gardens’ five resident trolls are fabulous sketching subjects! In this two-day workshop, young artists will develop an understanding of shape and form as they create their own sketches of these giants. Students will draw both on-site and in the studio and become familiar with a variety of drawing media, including various pencils and an introduction to watercolor. After capturing the trolls, participants will apply their new skills to other subjects at the Gardens such as butterflies, flowers, and frogs. All materials provided.

Harbor Arts & Books Fair is an admission-free, family-friendly event, making it a perfect day trip or weekend destination. Area inns, restaurants, and schooner sails welcome our Harbor Arts guests — and the coastal panoramic views from nearby Mount Battie are not to be missed! Exhibitor booths for the fall 2022 show will be along Atlantic Ave and in the National Historic Landmark Amphitheatre, across the street from Camden’s picturesque harbor.

This is one of the most respected arts and fine crafts festivals in midcoast Maine. The variety of offerings are outstanding, with 80-100 participating artists, live music, and the smells of local eats, all adding to the creative atmosphere. The venue is undeniably beautiful, in a large open park on the ocean’s edge, with a harborwalk, sailboats nearby and a summer breeze to enjoy.

The Gazebo at Steamboat Landing hosts live music throughout the weekend.
Waterfall Arts brings activities for young artists to engage in.
